Please read the information thoroughly. These decisions have been made after careful consideration of the following:

  • The needs and expectations of ALL our members – from Mighty Cross through to A Grade
  • Government restrictions and requirements during various pandemic Alert Levels
  • Sport specific guidance from Cycling New Zealand
  • The importance of acting responsibly for and within our local community

For 2020, Huttcross club racing is postponed until we reach Alert Level One

We require a 3-4 week run in to complete various Risk Assessments, landowner consents, and to organise Huttcross as we have come to know and love it (eg getting lots of folk together for much radness on bicycles in local parks in a community setting). We will consider series options as the pandemic crisis eases in New Zealand, which may mean either a shorter season or a later season. At this stage, we cannot provide any more information than this.

No alternative events

We considered lots of alternatives in lieu of Huttcross. However, we feel that many of these options aren’t accessible to all of our members (eg gravel grinds are not suitable for Mighty CX and some of our grownups enjoy Huttcross due to the accessibility it offers in the depths of winter in place of long days in the saddle). Zwift already has multiple races and rides that you can join. We encourage you to get out (or on) your bike in whatever form and enjoy pedalling but there will be NO ALTERNATIVE EVENTS until we can re-establish Huttcross as we know and love it.

Club members: Refunds, rollovers, and donations

If you were one of our die hard fans who grabbed your club membership for 2020 early on you have the following options:
  • A refund of your club membership (our thoughts are especially with our members who are experiencing financial hardship at this time)
  • Rollover your club membership to 2021 (if you do not want to participate in the 2020 season as/when it happens)
  • Leave your club membership in the pot as a donation to the club (for which we are very grateful)

Aotearoa Crossfest 2020

Regretfully, we have decided to cancel the 2020 Aotearoa Crossfest. We will host it in 2021. Read the press release from Cycling New Zealand here.

Support those who support us

As we drop to Alert Level 2 and many services are able to re-open, we strongly encourage you to support those who support Huttcross. Please follow our sponsors and supporters on social media, recommend them to friends, and if you do have spare wonga consider spending it with them:

Media release

Buckle up, Huttcross fans. 2020 is gonna be a ripper. As promised, here are the dates for your calendar. Aotearoa Crossfest dates are still embargoed as we await approval from the people in Aigle, Switzerland.

Skills Night.

27th Feb. New date TBC. 6pm. McLeod Park.

We’re pulling the skills sesh forward in 2020 to support the Thunderbolts BMX Club Open Night. This will also give you a bit more time to put those skills into practice before game day! Head to McLeod Park to learn which is the back end and which is the bell end of a ‘cross bike… or to sharpen your skillz if your surname begins with Van Der.

Huttcross Series.

17 May, 7 Jun, 21 Jun, 4 Jul, 26 Jul.

Saddle up for another 5-race club series. We’ll run to the same popular format as in 2019 with 5x unique venues (in fact, you’re getting 7 venues this year cos Brewtown’s Awesome Foursome and Aotearoa Crossfest will both be held on venues we won’t use for the club series!!!). You’ll have to stay tuned for venue announcements.

Yes, one race is on a Saturday. Our founding fathers brought CX to the Hutt Valley with the Independence Day CX Race 2009. Round 4 will be all things star spangled banner on the 4th of July in celebration.

Our EPIC sponsors are all back for another year. Crucial Custom Cycles and Wheelworks Handcrafted Wheels will be offering banger spot prizes again. So, you could be one of the lucky people to take home a custom frameset or custom wheelset at the end of the season!!! Johnsonville Cycles will be back providing neutral pit support and Wellington MTB Shuttles will be bringing the trailer flyover and helping us build some stuff for ACXF.

You will also see a mad cool purple gazebo with lightning bolts for our rego tent. The storm of Ngati Tama crushed the old gazebo but the crew at Faultline Coffee helped us get a full deep custom version.

Mighty CX also have their own major prize sponsor with Porirua Motor Body Repair sponsoring a top end kids bike and Ben from J’ville Cycles will help supply it.

Finally, the price structure will remain unchanged. We will open club membership on 1st March 2020. You will be able to join for $75. All club members race the Huttcross Series FOR FREE as well as knowing you’re supporting your local cyclocross club!!! Alternatively, it’s $25 per play for non-members. Mighty CX will stay $5 per event cos we want to see more kids on bikes. Barefoot Sports will be back providing electronic chip timing with some updated features…like being able to filter results based on CX v MTB.

We were STOKED to see so many ‘cross bikes across all Grades last year as well as more peeps toeing the line in A Grade. Long may it continue.

When we quizzed the Pres about it here’s what she said, “We’re amped to see the CX stoke shared so widely. We’re proud to encourage people of all abilities to get rowdy on bikes of all shapes and sizes but have a real passion for the humble cyclocross bicycle, so in 2020 we will continue to empower locals to have a bloody fun time getting loose on drop bars and skinny tyres and wearing plaid should it take their fancy, rather than mandating lycra or sock height”.

And…if you can’t wait until then…check out Akatarawa Gravel Fondo on 12th January for an excuse to burn off those festive season excesses on an epic gravel grind in our backyard.
